Craig Hospital Celebrates National Volunteer Week 2018

April 16, 2018

This year, National Volunteer Week is celebrated April 15-21. Craig Hospital is fortunate to have over 225 volunteers on a regular basis donating more than 19,100 hours during 2017.

Given that the latest value of volunteer time is $24.14/hour, the volunteer time donated to Craig in a year is $461,074! “While the dollar value can be estimated, the number of smiles, laughs, comfort and care that the volunteers bring into the halls of Craig is priceless! And we cannot even calculate the number of hours donated by clubs and organizations on campus and in the community,” says Jill Stelley Virden, Volunteer Manager at Craig.

Currently, volunteers are placed with Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Nursing, Chaplaincy, Research, Food Services, Foundation, Engineering and Clinical Care Management. In fact, the Gift Shop is staffed entirely by volunteers and all of the proceeds go back to the hospital. "We are so grateful for each and every volunteer who donates their time and energy toward making Craig a world-class rehabilitation hospital," says Jill.

This year, the Jim Richards Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award will be presented to long-time volunteer Troy Peterson, a Physical Therapy volunteer who has given his time to inpatients in Craig’s Be Fit class nearly every Wednesday morning for nine years. He will be honored at the volunteer dinner in June.

Remember to recognize our volunteers with a special high five, hug and thank you this week!
