It was a special Independence Day weekend for Craig Hospital patients on Dr. Mark Johansen’s (Dr. J.) team.
The interdisciplinary team hosted a special outing for patients outside the hospital walls to celebrate the July 4th holiday and apply what they’re learning at Craig to a real-world situation.
Denver’s Wash Park served as the therapy gym. Craig staff planned a fun-filled day with activities including grilling and cornhole. Patients also practiced putting up a tent and transferring from a chair to a mat.
Therapeutic Recreation Therapist Tom Horan said, “These types of outings establish a sense of normalcy that a lot of these patients don’t have inside the walls.
Dr. Johansen hopes that all Craig Hospital teams will follow suit and create their own outings.
“If patients know that there team is going to be out of the hospital and working on skills with their nurses and therapists then they’re more likely to come out and participate,” he said.
