Craig Hospital hosted the 5th annual Pedal 4 Possible on Saturday, September 14, 2019.
The charity cycling event through Boulder County featured courses for all skill levels, including a 10K, 30K, 50K, 100K and 100-mile route. Presenting sponsor PEARL iZUMi hosted the festivities at their headquarters in Louisville, Colo.
A record 445 participants raised more than $210,000 for Craig Culture of Care programs. Nearly 100 volunteers supported the ride in a variety of capacities, including serving as ride buddies and course marshals and providing aid station and course support.
Mark Mueller with team “Gearing Up for Mark” rode the 10K course with wife Alice and daughter Kelly.
Mark sustained a spinal cord injury in a ski accident on January 27, 2019. He rode in Pedal on a borrowed handcycle and raised money so other patients can access the same services and equipment that he benefitted from. Mark won both the “Top Fundraising Team” and Top Individual Fundraiser” nods, raising more than $14,500 for Craig.
Thirty-one participants registered as “virtual riders,” supporting the event and fundraising without riding in the event.
The twenty-three members of Team Sheila supported Craig graduate Sheila Verts, who was discharged from Craig on September 6, just one week before Pedal 4 Possible.
Though they were unable to come to Colorado for the event, members of Team Sheila gathered in Las Vegas to ride a metric century to support Craig and its Therapeutic Recreation program.
“The doctors, therapists and staff of Craig do amazing things rebuilding the lives of their patients and families,” shared Sheila’s husband, Drew Verts, on his fundraising webpage. “We've quickly fallen in love with the things that happen within these walls.”
