Team Craig Hospital runs Colfax to benefit Therapeutic Recreation

June 17, 2014

For the first time, Craig Hospital was an official Charity Partner of the Colfax Marathon on May 18. Out of the 14,000 total runners, more than 100 racers participated in the 5K, 10 Miler, half-Marathon, Marathon or Marathon relay as part of Team Craig Hospital. Wearing Team Craig Hospital t-shirts, Craig Hospital alumni, alumni family members and staff raced to show their Craig Hospital spirit.

Many of the Team Craig Hospital racers choose to fundraise for the Therapeutic Recreation Department as part of their race. While Craig’s traditional therapy programs teach survivors of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury to care for themselves and regain independence, the Therapeutic Recreation Department teaches them to return to those activities that make life worth living. Therapeutic Recreation offers patients the tools to cycle, play pool, cast a fishing reel, go whitewater rafting, or be artistic after your injury. Unfortunately, this valuable therapy is not covered by insurance and the program must rely on community support.

Thanks to Team Craig at Colfax, nearly $12,000 was raised for the Therapeutic Recreation Department at Craig Hospital.

“The Colfax Race is a wonderful opportunity for alumni, alumni family members and staff to raise awareness for Craig Hospital in front of 24,000 spectators while raising needed funds for the Therapeutic Recreation Department,” says Joseph Brucker, director of Sponsorship and Annual Support for the Craig Hospital Foundation.
