Craig Hospital receives $1 million challenge gift from Don and Lydia Digby

Trucking magnate and Craig Hospital graduate pledges $700,000 to encourage others to support Craig’s capital campaign

Englewood, Colo.— The Craig Hospital Foundation has received a recent gift of $1 million from Don Digby, founder and CEO of Navajo Express, a national transportation provider with refrigerated, dry van, and intermodal transport services, and his wife Lydia. The donation was made to Redefining ROI: The Campaign for Craig Hospital, for the capital project that will fund Craig’s expansion and renovation, and to Craig’s Patient Assistance Fund.

The Digbys earmarked $700,000 of the gift to challenge other donors to help the Craig Hospital Foundation complete fundraising for the $50 million capital campaign goal. The campaign supports Craig’s four-year expansion and renovation project. When completed in 2016, the project will have added approximately 85,000 square feet of new space and renovated approximately 135,000 square feet of existing space.

The remaining $300,000 of the gift will benefit Craig’s Patient Assistance Fund, which helps patients with minimal income or inadequate insurance to purchase adaptive equipment, remodel homes for accessibility, train caregivers, pay mortgages and meet other urgent needs.

Don Digby has a personal connection to Craig Hospital, having spent time as a patient after breaking his back and neck in a fourtrack motorcycle accident in 2001. He was able to walk out of Craig after two months of intensive inpatient care and return to work and an active lifestyle.

The Digbys became passionate supporters of Craig, donating more than $1.8 million over the years. The couple has housed family members of Craig patients in their home and supported individual patients financially. He visits the hospital weekly to mentor patients and encourage staff members.

“We are so grateful for Don and Lydia’s support and friendship over the years,” says Mary Feller, executive director of the Craig Hospital Foundation. “Their willingness to give back and help other patients is inspiring.”

The Craig Hospital Foundation hopes to have all fundraising activities completed by Dec. 31, 2015. Campaign donations can be made at

“The new Craig Hospital will be a truly state of the art facility” says Digby. “Giving to Craig is so meaningful because I can see results every time I am there—I hope others will join me in supporting a project that will make such a difference for the patients.”
