Statin’s Pleiotropic Action for Reducing Cardiovascular Risk after SCI (SPARC)

We are seeking individuals living with a spinal cord injury who are eligible to participate in a comprehensive heart evaluation including physical exam, blood tests, ECG, and advanced vascular function testing, receive statin medications for 12 weeks, and repeat the heart evaluation over several in person and virtual visits.

About the Program

People living with spinal cord injury (SCI) have a higher risk of early heart attacks and strokes. Our team believes that blood vessels after SCI are dysfunctional which can increase plaque build up. Statins are medications comonnly used to lower cholesterol and prevent heart attacks and strokes. They may also improve vascular health, even in people with SCI and normal cholesterol. This study is testing whether taking a statin can improve vascular health in people with SCI and help reduce future heart and stroke risk.
