Champions of Recovery: One Couple’s Longstanding Devotion to Craig Hospital
On the evening of Saturday, August 29, 2026, Heidi Loeffel and her husband, Craig Ewing, will take part in the Craig Hospital Foundation’s new event, Glow & Roll: Illuminate What’s Possible.
Taking place in Littleton’s Clement Park, the inclusive twilight 5K and 1-mile walk/run/roll preserves the best elements of Pedal 4 Possible with a fun, active event, as well as numerous fundraising opportunities, strong camaraderie and community, and an after-glow party.
“We are excited to be part of this new event,” Heidi says. “Craig and I have been supporting Foundation events since early 2000, and we always look forward to these very inspiring fundraisers.”
Side by Side for Craig
It was 1997 when Craig Ewing, a local attorney with a solo practice, was approached by Ron Branish, Craig Hospital’s CFO at the time.
“The hospital’s lawyer was ending his tenure at Craig, so Ron needed someone to replace him,” Craig explains. “My main role involved litigating against insurance payers over claim denials. I step in when insurance companies wrongfully deny coverage for a medically necessary procedure or refuse to pay out a valid claim. Basically, my firm works on behalf of the hospital’s patients, who are already overwhelmed with the high cost of their medical treatment and rehabilitation.”

Two years later, in 1999, Heidi joined the Ewing Law Firm as a paralegal, and the couple married in 2017. “It has been great working together as a team to support Craig patients,” she says. “Both of us are aligned with Craig’s mission and enjoy being able to support the hospital.”
She adds, “I have spent the past 27 years reading detailed medical records, learning what patients and their families endure. I also see firsthand how much the Foundation supports patients, from helping with home modifications and adaptive equipment to music therapy and air ambulances. The impact that the Foundation has on so many is quite impressive.”
According to the couple, Craig Hospital is a unique place, unlike any other hospital. “When insurance companies deny treatment, other hospitals terminate a patient’s stay and send the unpaid bills to collections,” Heidi says. “But Craig believes in sparing families this type of negative experience and hires us to help fight for patients in crisis.”
Craig adds, “The hospital treats the whole patient and believes in providing total care because it’s the right thing to do. In fact, Craig’s mission is to protect patients at all costs — definitely a rare and refreshing perspective in today’s health care system.”
A Meaningful Commitment
As Heidi and Craig prepare to retire in the next year, they are excited about what’s ahead. “But one thing that won’t change for us is our involvement in the hospital,” Craig says. “We love Craig Hospital, and it has been a privilege to be part of this wonderful place.”
Heidi adds, “Craig is truly an innovator in the health care space. Years ago, we drank the Craig Kool-Aid, and we happily continue to do so today.”
