Congratulations to David Schmid, RN, BSN, on his ASCIP Nursing Award!
Congratulations to David Schmid, RN, BSN, a Craig Hospital spinal cord injury (SCI) nurse who was recently named winner of the 2024 Staff Nurse Award for Excellence by the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals (ASCIP)!

The award is presented annually to an ASCIP Spinal Cord Injury Nursing member whose competent and compassionate nursing care for individuals living with an SCI sets them apart as a role model for their peers. Nominees must exhibit outstanding clinical performance in SCI/D care that demonstrates their knowledge and expertise in SCI/D nursing practice, creativity in nursing care and support to significant others.
David says he is honored to receive the award to which he credits his peers at Craig for their collaborative spirit as a constant source of learning, sharing and encouragement.
“Five years ago, when I started this position as a ‘baby nurse,’ I could not have imagined achieving such an award,” David says. “This success would not have been possible without all the amazing nurses at Craig, who have helped me to develop and grow as a rehab nurse along the way, and I hope I honor their efforts through my actions.”
In his work with SCI patients at Craig, David has consistently demonstrated his commitment to elevating the standard of care.
“His innovative thinking and collaborative approach have positioned him as a leader among his peers,” says Craig Director of Outpatient Nursing Services and Associate Chief Nurse Officer Mary Kelloff, RN, MSN, CBIS, who nominated David. “David’s relentless pursuit of excellence is evident in his proactive efforts to stay abreast of the latest best practices in nursing. He fosters a culture of innovation and excellence, urging his team to strive for nothing less than setting new benchmarks in patient care.”
