The Adventure Program at Craig Hospital recently had the opportunity to take a group of outpatients on an overnight camping and rafting excursion near Cotopaxi, CO. “Camping to me is a beautiful way to get people together and explore the outdoors and the lifestyle that we have in Colorado too,” says Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Joan Danks, as she describes the importance of these trips for patients at Craig Hospital.
The whitewater rafting portion of the excursion took place through Arkansas River Tours, a local rafting company that has provided outstanding guided river tours since 1973. Their experience and expertise was quickly noted as they put together a fabulous trip that provided a memorable and safe trip through Bighorn Sheep Canyon.
For many of the participants it was their first time having the opportunity to camp or raft since their injuries. Naturally, there were some uncertainties at the beginning of the trip. However, once everyone was in the outdoors, all the uncertainties and hesitations seemed to vanish into thin air. Most importantly, everyone was able to take a break from the world and just enjoy their surroundings with great company.
